VOLCANOS
TEACHER: David Agnew and Rodney Beckett
GRADE: Fifth and Third
SKILLS AREA: Science/Hands-on
MAJOR CONCEPT: Construction of volcanos in groups made up of four
or five students.
VOCABULARY: Lava- Magma erupting onto the surface.
Eruption- The ejection of molten rock, steam, etc.
as from a volcano.
Crater- The cup-shaped depression or cavity on the
surface of the earth marking the opening of
a volcano.
Active- Erupting or erupted during recorded
history.
Dormant- A volcano that shows no sign of activity
but scientists think is likely to erupt
again.
Extinct- No signs of activity over the past 10,000
years.
OBJECTIVES: Student Will:
1) Construct a class volcano.
2) Define vocabulary.
3) Explain how a volcano is formed.
4) Complete a worksheet on volcanos.
MATERIALS: Cups, aluminum pie pans, styrofoam pieces, liquid
soap, baking soda, vinegar, red food coloring, sand, water,
worksheets.
PROCEDURES: Teacher Will:
1) Explain the activity to the students.
2) Go over the vocabulary with the students.
3) Begin constructing the volcano.
4) Go over the procedures for constructing the
volcano:
a) First place pie pan down.
b) Next set the cup open side up in the center of
the pie pan.
c) Build around the cup with packed sand.
d) Add bits of styrofoam to the cup.
e) Fill the cup half full of liquid soap.
f) Add red food coloring for Magma color.
g) Mix in baking soda.
h) Stir
i) Carefully add vinegar to the mixture.
j) Observe the action of the Magma as it carries
the styrofoam rocks out of the volcano to from
lava.
5) Discuss the events of this model volcano to the
events of a real volcano.
6) Clean up.
7) Pass out the worksheets and collect them the next
morning. (Homework)
EVALUATION: Make sure every group member is participating during
the activity. Completion of the worksheet for a grade.
